Trump Delays Clayton’s Confirmation for Director of National Intelligence

Clayton’s Confirmation Hearing Postponed

Clayton was set to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee for his confirmation as Director of National Intelligence. This comes after he previously testified before the Senate Banking Committee during his confirmation as chairman of the SEC in 2017.

President Trump announced a delay in Clayton’s nomination, aiming to use it as leverage for the Senate to advance another nominee and a voting bill. This surprise announcement was made publicly on Truth Social, less than 12 hours before Clayton’s scheduled appearance. Currently attending the G7 Summit in France, Trump expressed his demands for FISA Section 702’s reauthorization to be linked to voting restrictions.

“Regarding the approval of our Great Patriot, Jay Clayton, we are cancelling the Senate Hearing RE: DNI today, and will not be going forward until Jamie McDonald is approved to be U.S. Attorney. In the meantime, Bill Pulte will remain as the Acting Director of National Intelligence.”

Who is Jay Clayton?

Clayton holds the position of federal prosecutor, leading the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. He has handled significant cases, including the indictment of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Clayton was also confirmed by the Senate as the head of the SEC during Trump’s first term. As the Director of National Intelligence, Clayton would oversee 18 agencies and advise the president on security issues.

The Senate sought a swift confirmation for Clayton, intending to have him sworn in by mid-June. Bill Pulte, Trump’s temporary choice for the position, would remain in the role until then.

Controversy Over Bill Pulte

Pulte’s appointment as the interim director has sparked concerns. Serving as the Federal Housing Finance Agency director, he lacks intelligence experience and has been criticized for his aggressive actions as a sub-cabinet official. Pulte has used social media to accuse Trump’s perceived adversaries of illegal activities, all of whom deny the claims.

The backlash surrounding Pulte contributed to the lapse of a spy law crucial for U.S. intelligence operations. Trump hopes Pulte will declassify 2020 election documents and reduce agency size.

Push for Quick Confirmation

Senators intended to expedite Clayton’s confirmation to curtail Pulte’s tenure. Clayton’s hearing was promptly scheduled following his nomination. If confirmed, Clayton will replace Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned due to personal reasons.

Gabbard’s tenure as director was contentious. Despite her limited experience and controversial political views, she was confirmed in a close vote. During her role, she participated in an FBI election office raid tied to Trump’s unsubstantiated fraud claims.
