Protests in Afghanistan Over Women’s Rights

4 days ago 0

The United Nations has voiced deep concern over the arrests of numerous women following protests in Afghanistan. These demonstrations resulted in the deaths of two people, according to reports.

On Monday in Herat, a major Afghan city, people took to the streets in a rare public opposition to the Taliban’s stringent restrictions on women. Authorities responded with extensive security measures on Friday to control the situation.

Witnesses and local media reported that the demonstrators marched to a government building in Herat, holding signs that read, Women, Work and Freedom! However, videos capturing these protests have not undergone independent verification.

Friday’s demonstrations followed events on Tuesday, where according to the United Nations, two people, including a young boy, were killed. At least 20 individuals suffered injuries during these protests.

Sayed Masoud Hussaini, a police spokesperson in Herat, dismissed reports of arrests or injuries, labeling the protestors as agitators, a claim that contradicts accounts from witnesses and UN reports.

During the Tuesday protests, many participants, consisting of men and women, gathered in a public square in Herat. They concealed their identities with scarves and masks while chanting slogans such as education, work and freedom!

The protests took place in a neighborhood known for being more socially liberal than other regions in Afghanistan. This area is home to a significant population of Afghanistan’s Hazara minority and Afghan refugees who had been expelled by Iran the previous year. The slogans mirrored those used in Iran’s 2022 protests, Woman, life, freedom.
