Florida Judge Orders Teen Held in Stepmurder Case

2 hours ago 0

A federal judge in Florida has ordered a teenager to remain in custody until his trial for the alleged sexual assault and murder of his stepsister aboard a cruise ship last year. This decision, revealed in unsealed court records on Monday, reverses an earlier ruling that permitted Timothy Hudson, 16, to stay with a relative during the pre-trial period concerning the November 7, 2025, death of Anna Kepner, who was 18.

On June 10, U.S. District Judge Edwin Torres expressed his concerns, stating that Hudson, who was charged as an adult, is considered a danger to himself and others. The judge believes that no curfew, monitoring, or placement with a guardian could adequately manage the risk. Hudson has entered a not guilty plea to the charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault. A conviction could lead to a life sentence.

Though Hudson lacks a previous criminal record and complied with the conditions of his earlier release, Judge Torres cited the alleged behaviors as suggesting a degree of psychopathy and absence of remorse. These aspects raise alarms about the potential for an unpredictable and violent incident, despite earnest efforts by his guardians.

Kepner’s father had married Hudson’s mother in December 2024. Allegations have been made against Hudson for the murder of Kepner 11 months later, during a vacation cruise. Kepner’s body was found in the cabin she shared with Hudson, hidden under a bed wrapped in a blanket and covered with life vests. A medical examination indicated she had been sexually assaulted and died from asphyxiation.

The local news outlet NBC South Florida reported that Hudson has been detained in Citrus County jail, with a deadline for transfer to Miami set for July 10. The trial is anticipated to commence in September.

Anna Kepner was described as a high school senior and cheerleader. She had aspirations to study at the University of Georgia. Her father mourned her passing as a profound loss, describing her as a “beautiful, bright young girl” with an unfulfilled future.
