Montana Senate Race: Democratic Rift Gives Republicans an Edge

1 hour ago 0

The Senate race in Montana has become critical for the Republicans due to a division among left-leaning candidates. Alani Bankhead, representing the Democrats, faces competition not only from Republican Kurt Alme but also from independent Seth Bodnar.

Democratic supporters hoped Bankhead would step aside to consolidate votes. At a press conference on Monday, these hopes diminished. Bankhead declared she had no intention of withdrawing in favor of Bodnar, stating, “If dropping out was the right move to pave the way for a better candidate, I would absolutely do it,” emphasizing her resolve, “But Seth Bodnar is absolutely the last person on the face of the Earth I would ever drop out of this race for.”

This situation complicates the race, making a Republican win more probable. The possibility of a split vote between Bankhead and Bodnar stands to benefit Alme. During the press conference at the University of Montana, Bankhead targeted Bodnar over past controversies from his time as university president. She highlighted a settlement of a sex-discrimination lawsuit under his leadership and accused him of dismissing women’s rights, urging him to “read the room and back out.”

Bodnar previously faced criticism for his alleged oversight of a biased organizational culture and lack of support for women’s advancement. He refuted these claims, stating that he promoted women to key positions and increased female representation among university deans.
