On a day when Group of 7 leaders met to address Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a Ukrainian drone strike on the Moscow Oil Refinery, located about 10 miles from the Kremlin.
Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that the city was hit by multiple drones, with at least one impacting the refinery. No casualties were reported, though the extent of the damage remains unknown.
The drone attack came in response to a Russian offensive the previous day against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, involving missiles and drones. These strikes resulted in at least 11 casualties and dozens of injuries, while significant cultural landmarks, including the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra cathedral, sustained damage.
President Zelensky described the drone strike as a justified retaliation against Russian aggression and the protracted conflict fueled by the Kremlin’s actions.
The Moscow Oil Refinery, situated in the Kapotnya district, is vital to the city’s fuel needs, supplying over a third of its requirements, including jet fuel.
As efforts for negotiation persist, Zelensky is urging direct talks with President Vladimir V. Putin to end the conflict. Ukraine’s military continues to target crucial oil and gas facilities in Russia to increase pressure on the Kremlin.
