MAGA Backed Mike Collins Wins GOP Senate Nomination in Georgia

2 hours ago 0

Republican Representative Mike Collins, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, has won a closely contested battle for the GOP Senate nomination in Georgia. The Associated Press reports that Collins defeated Derek Dooley, a former college football coach, in a Republican runoff election. Collins will face Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in the November election, a crucial contest that could determine control of the Senate.

Collins, representing Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, is the son of the late Representative Mac Collins. He co-owns a trucking company with his wife. He is viewed as a strong MAGA champion and had Trump’s endorsement days before the runoff election.

Dooley, backed by Governor Brian Kemp and his wife Marty Kemp, had portrayed himself as an outsider. Despite Kemp’s support, Dooley fell short against Collins. He emphasized dissatisfaction among voters with current Congressional leadership.

“Not having a record is not gonna win,” Collins said to supporters, emphasizing results-driven leadership over outsider ambition.

Collins faced scrutiny from the House Ethics Committee over allegations involving an intern’s romantic relationship with his chief of staff. He dismissed the intern for making inappropriate social media comments during the campaign. Meanwhile, Dooley had faced accusations of a “pay-to-play” scandal, which he denied.

As the Republicans focused on their nomination contest, Senator Jon Ossoff has been fortifying his campaign with significant fundraising efforts. Collins aims to unite the Republican base for the upcoming general election.

Trump’s endorsement power has been prominent in recent GOP primaries, successfully influencing outcomes in various states. However, he experienced a setback when his endorsed candidate, Randy Feenstra, lost in Iowa. Despite this, Trump’s influence remains a considerable factor in Republican politics.
