Colleen Taylor, from The New York Times, reports that Bob Dylan, who celebrated his 85th birthday this spring, shares his thoughts on aging in a new article. Dylan articulates his experience of aging with poetic wisdom and insight.
Dylan remarks, “The best part of being in your 80s is outliving the clocks that have pursued you. It’s gaining freedom from the illusion that anything was ever under control.” These are the profound words one might expect from Dylan. He further adds, “You no longer strive to keep up with the parade. You’re an old monarch from a forgotten realm who is less susceptible to influence.” He explains the lack of urgency and the absence of concern over past deeds.
Dylan observes that reaching this stage in life brings the realization that “much of what mattered doesn’t hold true in the ways you imagined.”
The journey of aging isn’t all simplicity and wisdom. Dylan admits challenges still exist. He states, “The passionate drive remains, but your body reminds you that much has already been done. While nothing surprises you anymore, it’s not as comforting as it seems, and the illusions have dwindled.”
Another aspect he finds challenging is achieving understanding that earlier could have changed things. He reflects, “At youth, you perceive time as progressing, but at 80, you realize time stands still while we are the ones in motion.”
Nevertheless, at 85, Dylan continues to make the most of his time. He is actively performing, touring North America. His next live performance is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17. Tour dates are available on his official website.
