Authorities reported that a Russian warship fired warning shots close to a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel, highlighting growing tensions between Russia and the UK. Although the incident caused no damage, it occurred about 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight, beyond UK territorial waters.
The UK’s Defense Ministry initiated an investigation after the yacht reported the firing by a Russian navy vessel. The sailing yacht, which lacked a motor, did not suffer any damage or injuries and continued its journey from the UK to France. The yacht became close to the Russian vessel due to foggy conditions, according to the BBC.
The Russian Defense Ministry explained that the frigate Admiral Grigorovich attempted to contact the yacht, which was on a dangerous path near the warship. When the yacht did not respond, the ship launched flares and sound signals. The frigate commander fired warning shots across the yacht’s bow after it approached within 150 meters. The yacht changed course and moved away.
Both Russian and British accounts matched, affirming that the warning shots were not aimed directly at the yacht and were intended to prevent a collision. The Royal Navy routinely shadows Russian warships in the English Channel, and patrol vessel HMS Mersey was monitoring the situation and offered assistance to the yacht’s crew.
Recently, British commandos detained a tanker in the Channel, accused of shipping Russian oil against international sanctions due to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. The British military does not link this tanker incident with the yacht encounter.
The UK has faced frequent encounters with Russian vessels, warning Moscow of readiness to handle any territorial incursions. Last month, UK forces tracked a Russian attack submarine and two spy submarines near UK waters. A Royal Navy frigate and aircraft followed the Russian vessels for weeks, preventing malicious activities, as per former Defense Secretary John Healey. He alleged that Russia used the Iran war as a diversion to increase negative activities against Europe.
Five years earlier, Russia claimed it fired warning shots at the British destroyer HMS Defender near Crimea, an area Moscow claims as territorial waters. The UK denied the event, and it marked a significant incident of using live fire against a NATO warship since the Cold War.
Military incidents persist as tensions between Russia and the West continue to rise.
