Toy Story 5: A Modern Tale of Toys vs. Technology

2 hours ago 0

The beloved characters of Pixar’s franchise return in the latest installment, Toy Story 5. The film features familiar voices like Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack, with new additions like Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien.

Set to release on June 19, Toy Story 5 centers on technology as a major adversary. The storyline introduces eight-year-old Bonnie, who, unlike her peers, still plays with toys instead of digital devices. To solve her social challenges, her parents introduce her to a kid-friendly tablet, Lilypad.

Bonnie’s toys soon realize that times have changed, learning from their abandoned counterparts that the era of toys might be ending. Woody and Buzz, voiced by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, reprise their iconic roles but take a supporting position as Joan Cusack’s Jessie emerges as a central figure.

Jessie navigates a new conflict against Lilypad, as technology threatens the traditional playtime. The film cleverly navigates the discourse on technology without demonizing it, suggesting instead that Lilypad claims to have Bonnie’s interests in mind.

This installment reunites the audience with familiar characters such as Rex, Hamm, Bo Peep, and Forky. It introduces new personalities, including Smarty Pants, voiced by Conan O’Brien, providing comedic moments. The cast also brings in talents like Keanu Reeves and Kristen Schaal.

Directed and written by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris, Toy Story 5 delivers a narrative that, while not surpassing the original trilogy, offers a relevant theme on technology’s role in children’s lives. Veteran Randy Newman delivers the musical score, and Taylor Swift’s song closes the film.

Critics regard Toy Story 5 as a notable improvement over its predecessor, underlining the production’s quality entertainment value. Rated PG for thematic elements and humor, the movie runs for 1 hour and 42 minutes.
