European Parliament Votes for Tougher Migrant Return System Amid Tensions

The European Parliament has witnessed a dramatic session where lawmakers engaged in heated chants following the approval of significant changes to the European Union’s migrant return system. This development reflects a shift towards stricter immigration policies as public frustration over migration issues rises.

On Wednesday, European Parliament members voted 418 to 218, with 30 abstentions, to enact the Return Regulation. This regulation aims to expedite the removal of third-country nationals staying illegally in the European Union. The session quickly became contentious, with right-wing lawmakers applauding and chanting “send them back.” In reaction, left-wing lawmakers condemned them with “shame on you.”

The legislation requires formal ratification by the Council of the European Union and publication in the Official Journal to be enforced. The confrontation highlights the stark divide within Europe on migration policies, even as its institutions advance measures once deemed politically sensitive.

The new rules permit member states to detain certain migrants for up to 24 months, with a potential six-month extension. Additionally, they create a framework for establishing “return hubs” in third countries willing to receive migrants with return decisions.

Supporters argue these measures are crucial due to some European Union countries’ challenges in implementing deportation orders. According to the European Conservatives and Reformists Group, citing the European Commission, only about 20% of migrants receiving return orders are eventually deported.

The vote follows earlier reports that the European Union is leaning towards stricter border and asylum regulations amid concerns over illegal immigration. These measures include enhanced screening, identity checks, security evaluations, and biometric data use, such as fingerprints and facial recognition.

Conservative leaders praised the Parliament’s decision. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the vote as a “great success” and termed the legislation a “historic measure.” Other right-wing figures in France and Austria acknowledged the moment as evidence of right-wing influence shaping EU policies.

Conversely, critics accuse lawmakers of undermining migrant rights and eroding essential protections. Socialist vice president of the European Parliament Javi López labeled the session as “disgraceful,” while Italian Green and Left Alliance MEP Ilaria Salis found the celebration “horrifying.”

Human rights advocates have voiced concerns as well. UN human rights chief Volker Türk cautioned that the new rules pose risks of increasing detention and establishing offshore return hubs while weakening safeguards against forced returns.
