Bill Maher Urges Democrats to Celebrate the 250th Anniversary of America

Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” delivered a message to Democrats contemplating boycotting the upcoming America 250 festivities due to their discontent with President Donald Trump. Maher encouraged Democrats to avoid pettiness and participate in the celebration.

Referring to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, which prominently featured American flags, Maher argued, “You can’t take back the flag in an hour if the rest of the time you treat patriotism as something vaguely embarrassing.” His comments came amid preparations for the annual Fourth of July celebration, where Trump plans to host significant events for America’s 250th anniversary. Despite these events, many Democrats express reluctance to join, citing their dissatisfaction with Trump as the main reason.

Democrats suggest doom, not celebration, with their July 4 messages.

Maher criticized Democrats for their reluctance to embrace the America 250 celebration, attributing their hesitation to discontent with the Trump administration. He stated, “I’m not saying Trump doesn’t want to blur the line between himself and the country. He sure does. That’s what wannabe authoritarians do. They try to blur the line. Don’t be an accomplice.” He condemned the notion that the country should not be celebrated merely because of the current president.

Maher further explained that while the left is wary that Trump may shift the focus of the anniversary onto himself, the event is about the country, not any individual. He encouraged Democrats to center their attention on America during the upcoming Fourth of July. “The question is whether we will all help Trump do it. We shouldn’t,” Maher continued. “This is about America. He isn’t America. He’s a temporary caretaker of America—a country’s employee.”

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from June 12-15, among 1,537 U.S. adults, highlighted differences in patriotic displays planned for July 4. It found that 64% of Republicans intended to display an American flag or flag bunting outside their home, compared to merely 27% of Democrats.

This revelation led Maher to deliver a motivational message to Democrats, urging them not to spoil their enjoyment over discontent with the president. “Go to the party. It’s a big celebration,” Maher said. “You probably won’t run into him. This country’s 3.8 million square miles—and that’s without Greenland.”

Maher emphasized, “Especially since, for all of Trump’s nonsense, America is still here. Still incredibly prosperous by world standards, still a place people aspire to reach, and still free enough to allow me to place ‘nonsense’ alongside the president’s name.”

In his concluding remarks, Maher rallied viewers by noting that dismissing patriotism due to dissatisfaction with specific leadership neglects the First Amendment and what America symbolizes. “The message that most threatens authoritarians isn’t ‘America sucks.’ It’s ‘America is ours too,’ Maher said. “Every election year, Democrats seem to remember patriotism for about an hour at their convention when they’re trying to win back swing voters.”

With the 250th anniversary of American independence approaching, Maher implores Democrats to set aside their disputes with President Trump and come together, emphasizing that personal political identity should not overshadow national unity.
