The paint on Washington’s Reflecting Pool is peeling after recent renovations ordered by former President Donald Trump. He alleged vandalism as the cause. “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool,” he posted on social media. “Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” Trump provided no further details on these claims.
Authorities such as the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department have not yet responded to requests for comments on these allegations. Meanwhile, visitors observed National Park Service employees using vacuums to clean the pool on June 20, 2026.
The Washington Post reported an arrest related to the peeling paint, yet this does not fully account for the algae bloom and areas of loose paint detached from the pool’s bottom. Trump suggested malicious intent, referring to chemicals allegedly used on the National Mall in an attempt to damage the Reflecting Pool.
Previously, large numbers “86 47” appeared etched into discolored grass on the National Mall. Authorities suspect these numbers might be a threat to Trump, the 47th president, as “86” could imply “getting rid of.” Investigations are ongoing.
Security in the area remains heightened. Oklahoma City Police Department officers, deputized for the U.S.’s 250th-anniversary events, patrol near the problematic sections of the Reflecting Pool. The pool underwent a $14 million refurbishment for America’s 250th celebrations but quickly faced issues with algae, which were treated with chemicals. Now, chunks of blue paint are missing, revealing the pool’s rocky bottom.
