Counterterrorism officials are conducting an investigation following a violent rampage in Scotland that resulted in injuries to five men. The attacks, deemed anti-Muslim in nature, initiated near a mosque in Edinburgh on Friday evening. Two men were injured at approximately 9 p.m., according to BBC News.

The suspect, a 36-year-old Scottish individual, allegedly continued the assaults in another section of the city, targeting three more men. The victims, aged 22 to 39, did not suffer life-threatening injuries, although three required hospitalization.

A separate incident involved the suspect attacking a vehicle at a gas station. The car was discovered with shattered windows and an axe inside, and the suspect was seen toppling shelves in the station’s mart, as reported by BBC News.

Surveillance footage allegedly captured the suspect wielding a weapon outside a pizzeria. Social media videos depicted chaos in additional areas across the city.

Police Scotland addressed the situation, stating, “Officers responded to multiple reports of a fast-moving sequence of events across Edinburgh before arresting a man and public safety was our priority.” The suspect was apprehended at approximately 9:30 p.m. local time and remains in custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton expressed concern, stating, “This was a shocking attack and my first thoughts are with those who were injured and most directly affected.” She emphasized there is no room for “racism or faith-based hate” in Scotland.

BBC News noted that the suspect claimed upon arrest that he was “protecting the country.” Extensive investigations are underway, supported by Counter Terrorism Policing and directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.

The Muslim Council of Britain denounced the attack, urging the community to stay alert and report any Islamophobic hate crimes to authorities. “This incident follows racist pogroms in Belfast targeting minority families,” the council commented, attributing such violence to political rhetoric that vilifies entire communities.
