The morning following the first overnight session of renewed talks between the United States and Iran, focused on transforming an incomplete truce into a lasting peace deal, the atmosphere was as warm as the weather currently gripping Switzerland.
Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar declared early Monday that Vice President JD Vance and his Iranian counterparts have made ‘encouraging progress’ toward finalizing a peace agreement within the next 60 days. Swiss officials described the outcome as ‘constructive.’
Despite this, details emerging from the negotiations suggest that the coming months may be challenging and efforts to finalize a deal could be inconsistent.
Tehran’s delegation, led by Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, temporarily left the discussions on Sunday to protest a social media post from President Trump. The post threatened renewed American attacks if negotiations failed to yield a deal. They later returned.
Significantly, several crucial topics remain unsolved and seemed to dominate the talks at the Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne.
The environment remains cautiously optimistic, though negotiators anticipate obstacles as they work towards agreement within the planned timeframe.
