In Arlington, Texas, Lionel Messi set a new World Cup scoring record with his 17th goal during a match against Austria on Monday. This achievement came shortly after Messi showed frustration over missing a penalty kick earlier in the game. The goal in the 38th minute gave Argentina a 1-0 lead. This milestone occurred just two days shy of Messi’s 39th birthday, amidst personal concerns about his ailing father.
Messi has now scored in six consecutive World Cup games. He joins the ranks of France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho, who have also achieved this feat. Previously, Messi had matched Germany’s Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals. He accomplished this during Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria with a hat trick.
“I expect my record to fall in this tournament,” Klose stated. “With more teams, there are more games and opportunities to score. Messi is a genius and deserves this record,” he added.
Messi’s record-breaking moment occurred when goalkeeper Alexander Schlager was caught off-guard as Thiago Almada allowed Facuno Medina’s pass to reach Messi. From 20 yards, Messi skillfully directed the ball into the net. He celebrated with a passionate display to the overwhelmingly pro-Argentina crowd of 70,649 fans at the sold-out AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys.
Earlier in the match, Messi had the chance to break the record with a penalty kick in the ninth minute. His attempt missed the right post. Currently, Messi has a record of four successful penalty kicks out of seven tries in World Cup regulation play.
Messi’s previous match against Algeria marked his 200th international appearance and came exactly 20 years after his World Cup debut in Germany. Monday’s match was Messi’s 28th World Cup appearance, setting another FIFA record.
The penalty kick awarded to Argentina came after Lautaro Martinez was tackled in the box by Xaver Schlager and Stefan Posch. Although Schlager made contact with the ball, Posch drew a penalty for his actions.
Meanwhile, Messi’s father is undergoing treatment for an unspecified illness. Jorge Messi has been influential in his third son’s career, handling his business affairs as his agent. Messi was moved to tears during his match against Algeria due to personal challenges unrelated to soccer.
