Representative Dan Goldman recently visited a coffee shop chain in New York City that sparked controversy through social media. The tensions arise from his ties to AIPAC and his stance on Israel, which is a contentious point in one of New York’s more progressive and Jewish areas.
Goldman, who is currently facing a primary challenge from Brad Lander, made a stop at Poetica Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The visit occurred outside his district on the final day of early voting for the Democratic primary. He was accompanied by his 7-year-old daughter.
After his visit, Poetica Coffee posted a sharp Instagram message that criticized Goldman. The post featured an image of him at the shop’s cash register, seemingly from a surveillance video. It read: “We see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?”
The statement continued: “We don’t serve racists, fascists, homophobes, genocide enablers or anyone in between. Too bad we didn’t recognize you right away, or we would have turned you away.”
Goldman’s support for Israel has caused friction in his re-election campaign in New York’s 10th District, covering parts of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. In response to the coffee shop’s post, he commented that his visit was primarily for his daughter to use the restroom. He also mentioned buying a coffee to thank an employee for allowing them to use the facilities.
