U.S. Lifts Iran Oil Sanctions Amid Nuclear Talks

2 hours ago 0

The Trump administration has announced a temporary lift on oil sanctions against Iran as part of a shift in U.S. policy. This move may offer Iran an economic advantage after years of selling oil at a discount due to sanctions.

Treasury Secretary’s Statement
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the 60-day exemption would allow the purchase of Iranian oil in U.S. dollars. He indicated that productive talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, had led to this decision.

Progress in Nuclear Inspections
Vice President JD Vance, who has been leading negotiations, mentioned that Iran had permitted United Nations inspectors to visit nuclear sites. He emphasized that this is a significant milestone towards halting Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

President Trump also shared on social media that Iran had agreed to major weapons inspections to ensure transparency in its nuclear activities.

However, the specifics of when inspectors would visit the sites remain unclear. An immediate statement from the International Atomic Energy Agency has yet to be released. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, clarified that Tehran made no new commitments and any inspections would occur under existing agreements.

Communication and Tension Reduction
In talks held at Bürgenstock, Vice President Vance highlighted new communication channels aimed at reducing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon. Both regions have seen improvements, with a reduction in attacks between Israel and Hezbollah.
