Four months ago, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was at the peak of his career. He had just embarked on a new four-year contract after leading the second-largest school district in the U.S. through a renowned post-pandemic transformation. However, days later, circumstances changed dramatically as the FBI conducted raids on his home and office, placing him on paid leave. The situation resurfaced when Carvalho resigned, stating in his letter that the district needed to remain focused on students and education without any distractions.
The FBI raid in late February was part of an ongoing investigation linked, at least partially, to his involvement with a contractor associated with a failed AI chatbot endeavor introduced to the district. Carvalho’s late-night resignation marked a significant and unexpected conclusion to one of the district’s most impactful tenures.
Carvalho’s Leadership and Achievements
Carvalho took on the role in February 2022 amidst several challenges, including declining academic performance due to the pandemic, increasing absenteeism, and a decrease in enrollment, all threatening state funding tied to daily attendance. Despite these issues, the district achieved notable academic progress under his guidance. In January, Governor Gavin Newsom commended Carvalho during the State of the State address, highlighting LAUSD’s superior recovery in comparison to statewide trends.
In his resignation letter, Carvalho highlighted the district’s success. Students from low-income backgrounds, those with disabilities, foster youth, and Black and Latino students all surpassed pre-pandemic achievements, showcasing the hard work and commitment throughout the district.
Challenges and Resignation
Carvalho faced numerous unexpected challenges. School closures due to the Eaton and Palisades fires severely affected students and staff. Additionally, undocumented families expressed fear of immigration enforcement at school campuses amid President Trump’s stringent measures in Los Angeles. Carvalho, along with district officials, worked hard to safeguard students in this challenging environment.
The notion of Carvalho’s resignation was unimaginable earlier, given his new four-year contract commencing just days before the FBI’s action.
FBI Investigation and AI Chatbot Issue
On February 25, federal agents searched Carvalho’s home and office, along with Debra Kerr’s property in Florida. Kerr, a long-time professional associate and education sales consultant, was involved with AllHere, an AI firm that ultimately failed. Although neither Carvalho nor Kerr faced charges, authorities found potential links to a $3 million financial setback due to the chatbot project failure.
In March 2024, Carvalho had unveiled AllHere’s AI chatbot “Ed,” intended to aid families in supporting their children’s education. The venture ended shortly after its launch due to the company’s collapse as its founder faced fraud charges.
Leadership Transition and District’s Direction
Following the FBI raid, the district placed Carvalho on leave and assigned veteran administrator Andres Chait as acting superintendent. The Board of Education announced that Chait would continue in this capacity until a permanent decision is made regarding the leadership. In April, Chait, along with district officials, successfully navigated through a potential strike by three unions that represented teachers, support staff, and administrators. The strike could have resulted in campus closures.
While away, Carvalho continued to receive his $440,000 salary along with a $50,000 annual retirement annuity. Despite no charges against him, his paid leave raised debates amidst existing budget pressures and employee layoffs.
The Board of Education affirmed its dedication to fostering stability post-Carvalho. As the district plans its future path, it aims to concentrate on new learning objectives while managing existing financial and operational challenges.
