North Korea has taken a significant step in expanding its naval capabilities with the commissioning of the Choe Hyon, the largest warship it has ever built. The vessel, weighing 5,000 tons, is reportedly equipped with nuclear-capable missiles, marking a notable advancement in North Korea’s military strength.
At the commissioning ceremony held at the Nampo port, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un emphasized the importance of the navy entering full-fledged service. He stated that the program to equip the navy with nuclear weapons continues to progress as planned.
For years, North Korea’s naval forces have been outmatched by South Korea and U.S. fleets due to outdated, Soviet-era ships confined mainly to coastal patrols. The Choe Hyon symbolizes Kim’s ambition to extend his naval power and nuclearize the navy, thereby enhancing North Korea’s capabilities beyond its coastal waters.
Kim’s push for naval expansion aligns with North Korea’s increased collaboration with Russia, providing weapons and troops for Russia’s actions in Ukraine. In return, Russia reportedly supplies oil, food, and technology to assist in modernizing North Korea’s military. Analysts have noted Russian influence in recent missile tests from the Choe Hyon, including technologies possibly incorporated into a supersonic cruise missile.
North Korea’s nuclear arsenal has traditionally depended on ballistic missiles, lacking aircraft or submarines that can carry nuclear weapons. Yet, recent developments show Kim prioritizing nuclearization of the navy. This includes testing submarine-launched ballistic missiles, revealing a hull for a nuclear-powered submarine, and developing unmanned underwater vehicles purported to hold nuclear warheads.
