1 hour ago 0

A potent earthquake struck off Japan’s northern coast, registering a magnitude of 7.2 according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Initially, the quake was reported as a magnitude of 6.9. It occurred off the eastern coast of Iwate at a depth of approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey also noted a magnitude of 6.9. This region has been experiencing frequent seismic activity, including a significant quake in December that led to a prolonged advisory.

Tokyo experienced mild shaking during Thursday’s rush hour, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, according to Minoru Kihara, the government spokesperson.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized her government is prioritizing safety while preparing for any required relief operations. She cautioned residents in affected areas to remain vigilant about possible aftershocks.

Tomoko Nagane, a primary school principal in Hashikami town, recounted feeling moderate sideways shaking while driving. Children at her school were frightened but unharmed. Classes were canceled, and children returned home safely.

Japan’s NHK public television shared reports from various journalists in the quake-affected towns, including Sendai and Morioka, noting prolonged shaking but no visible damage. Commuters continued their routines, though some rail services were halted for safety inspections.

Authorities reported no abnormalities at nuclear power plants, including the Fukushima Daiichi plant that suffered damage in the 2011 disaster.

Japan’s position on the Pacific Ring of Fire subjects it to frequent significant earthquakes.
