Prayer Rally on National Mall Highlights Christian Focus

2 weeks ago 0

Thousands gathered on the National Mall for a prayer rally focused on Christian themes. Staged against the Washington Monument, the rally featured worship music and symbolic imagery like stained-glass windows depicting the nation’s founders with a cross.

Speakers emphasized Christianity’s historical ties to America. Critics expressed concerns about promoting Christian nationalism. President Donald Trump read scripture via video, quoting from 2 Chronicles, which some interpret as supporting the idea of America as a Christian nation.

High-profile Republicans participated, including Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson, among others, recognizing 250 years of U.S. independence. Evangelical supporters of Trump, such as Paula White-Cain and Franklin Graham, were present.

The Rev. Adam Russell Taylor expressed concern about narrowing the nation’s religious commitments.

A diverse range of religious leaders voiced both support and concerns. Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner highlighted America’s religious diversity. Many attendees wore Trump gear, participating under warm conditions, while some believed the event marked a significant spiritual rededication.

Charlies Kirk’s activism resonated with attendees like Alessandra Seawright, who attended with her mother, valuing the event’s conservative Christian message.

Pete Hegseth encouraged prayers for the nation. Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, a non-Christian leader, spoke against antisemitism, receiving applause.

Organized by Freedom 250, the event faced financial scrutiny from Democrats. Progressive groups staged protests, including a Trump-like golden calf balloon referencing idolatry. The Interfaith Alliance projected protest messages on nearby buildings.
