In a contentious Capitol Hill hearing on Wednesday, House Democrats found themselves at odds with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The hearing, which quickly descended into verbal skirmishes, witnessed moments of chaos and disrupted decorum. Representative Maxine Waters of California, a prominent Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, repeatedly clashed with Chairman Representative French Hill of Arkansas as Bessent continuously interrupted her questions, ignoring her persistent calls to ‘reclaim my time.’
Attempting to regain control, Waters implored Hill, “Can you shut him up?” Her plea was met with a retort from Bessent, who questioned, “Can you maintain some level of dignity?” The exchange underscored the tension revolving around President Donald Trump’s tariffs, particularly those affecting home building materials.
The hearing focused on the annual report of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, which assesses the stability of the U.S. financial systems. However, discussions were frequently diverted by heated disputes. Massachusetts Representative Stephen Lynch sought answers from Bessent regarding a slowdown in corporate investigations. When Bessent attributed the slowdown to the Biden administration, Lynch urged him to be more responsive, stating, “Please be responsive to my question.” Bessent countered, “I am, sir,” accusing the back-and-forth exchanges of consuming valuable time.
Republican Chairman Hill had to interject multiple times, requesting Bessent to respect the speaking time allocated to committee members. One such moment arose during Representative Joyce Beatty’s inquiry about the use of the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund for housing projects. Beatty demanded clarity, asking Bessent for a simple yes or no. Bessent’s non-committal response, “Uh, number three,” led Beatty to record the exchange as a refusal to answer the question.
Representative Gregory Meeks of New York questioned Bessent about Trump’s cryptocurrency firm and its $500 million stake sale to a member of the Emirati royal family. Meeks inquired whether Bessent would halt the transaction and scrutinize the related licensing application. Bessent deflected the query by saying the appropriate agency was independent and then attempted to divert attention to a 2006 trip Meeks took to Venezuela, leading Meeks to react by accusing Bessent of covering for the president.
The hearing was rife with moments of tension, with Meeks accusing Bessent, “Stop covering for the president. Don’t be a flunky. Work for the American people.” This prompted Hill to issue a reminder about maintaining decorum. Republican Representative Andy Barr of Kentucky later apologized to Bessent, commenting on the heated exchanges aimed at him during the proceedings.
“I think what we’re learning from this hearing, Mr. Secretary, is how much Trump derangement syndrome is a threat to emotional stability,” Barr remarked. “There’s been a lot of lectures directed at you today.”
Democrats lamented the contentious tone of the hearing, with Representative Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri describing it as “embarrassing,” and questioning the intent of the meeting, “I’ve learned that you can’t make honey and sting at the same time. The question is whether we came here today to sting or whether we came here to talk about issues that are of importance to the nation.”
Representative Juan Vargas of California opted not to pose his planned questions, disturbed by the conduct he witnessed. Turning to Hill, Vargas commented, “Mr. Chairman, we’ve had some very good hearings recently. This was not one of them. This is not your finest day, and it’s too bad, because I think you’re a very competent person.”
