Emergency crews faced a challenging situation on Wednesday night as they battled a significant fire and worked to evacuate patients at a hospital in Pennsylvania.
According to a spokesperson for the hospital, all patients, staff, and visitors were successfully evacuated from Lehigh Valley Hospital located in Dickson City. Emergency responders remained active at the scene until early Thursday.
Governor Josh Shapiro acknowledged the efforts of the state’s police, emergency management agency, and health department in responding to the incident. He expressed his gratitude on the social platform X, stating, Thank you to every first responder running toward danger to help their fellow Pennsylvanians.
He also mentioned that he and his wife, Lori, are keeping the staff, patients, their families, and the entire community in their thoughts and prayers.
Videos and photos shared online revealed flames erupting from what is believed to be the hospital’s Orthopedic Institute. The precise cause of the fire in Dickson City, located roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of Scranton, was not immediately determined.
U.S. Representative Rob Bresnahan Jr., representing the district that includes Dickson City, also took to X to express his appreciation. He praised the first responders and hospital teams, saying, Deep gratitude goes to the first responders and hospital teams whose swift, professional actions ensured the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
