Suicide Bombing Targets Mosque in Islamabad Suburb, Resulting in Numerous Casualties

An unfortunate event unfolded in Islamabad, Pakistan, as a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device outside a mosque on a Friday. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of at least 31 lives, with nearly 170 individuals sustaining injuries. The attack occurred at the Imambargah Khadijatul Kubra mosque in the Tarlai suburb during the crowded time of Friday prayers, as confirmed by a city government spokesperson who communicated with journalists.

Images from the scene depicted a distressing sight, with individuals lying injured on the mosque floor while others were rushed into vehicles to be taken to medical facilities. Alarmingly, children were among those affected by the explosion.

The security official, requesting anonymity, noted a lull in such attacks since a suicide bombing targeted a court in Islamabad two months prior. This previous incident led to an elevation in the city’s alert status to its highest level.

The official speculated, “Apparently bombers failed to reach big targets inside the capital and turned to softer targets such as mosques and public places in the suburbs.” This implies a strategic shift in targeting less secure areas.

Eyewitness accounts provided further insight into the harrowing event. Zahir Hussain, present at the scene, recounted how he was thrown against his car by the force of the explosion just as he was parking to enter the mosque. “After that, for a while there was horrific silence, then what I saw in the mosque, I don’t have words to explain it,” he expressed.

The response from emergency services and law enforcement was swift, with an emergency declared for Islamabad’s hospitals. Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital quickly reached capacity, necessitating the transfer of patients to other hospitals both in Islamabad and in the nearby city of Rawalpindi.

In the aftermath of the attack, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged with the country’s interior minister and instructed an investigation to be launched into the dreadful incident. He vowed that those responsible would face justice and emphasized the importance of preventing any spread of hatred and insecurity.

No group or individual has immediately taken responsibility for the attack. Pakistan has faced periodic violence from various regional terrorist entities. These include both Afghan and Pakistani Taliban factions, and ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K), among others, which are known for indiscriminate attacks on both civilians and security forces.
