The search for Craig Berry, a retired special forces soldier accused of shooting his wife, stretched into its fifth day on Tuesday. Authorities are combing through northern Tennessee to locate him. Berry faces charges of attempted murder and reportedly evaded capture by hiding in the woods. The Stewart County Sheriff’s Office notes Berry’s extensive survival training.
According to the sheriff’s office, Berry possesses strong swimming and diving skills and remains in good physical condition. He knows the local terrain well, complicating the search efforts. An image from a trail camera dated May 1, 2026, is believed to show him.
The sheriff’s office stated Berry is armed, possibly carrying extra ammunition, and was last seen wearing camouflage clothing. Though investigators think Berry lacks a phone, they remain open to the idea that he received outside help following the reported shooting.
Authorities are coordinating with entities like the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. A thorough search is planned for the eastern side of Kentucky Lake soon. Sheriff Frankie Gray mentioned that finding Berry might prove time-consuming.
Berry’s escape began early on May 1 after deputies reacted to reports of his wife being shot during a domestic incident. She was taken to the hospital, but her current condition is unknown. Stewart County, which lies along the Kentucky border, is about 75 miles from Nashville.
