A tragedy occurred involving a young college athlete, Emily Mae Smith, age 20, from Greenville, New York. She was killed in a hit-and-run accident during the early hours of Saturday morning near Pierrepont Avenue in Potsdam, as reported by the Potsdam Police Department.
Emily Smith was a transfer student at the State University of New York (SUNY) Potsdam, majoring in business administration. She was recognized for her academic excellence, having earned a spot on the Dean’s List. Dr. Suzanne Smith, President of SUNY Potsdam, noted Emily’s academic success and the strong friendships she had formed since joining the college.
Police reported that Emily, a rising star in the SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team, was walking near campus when a black Cadillac Escalade struck her. The incident occurred around 3:37 a.m. Emily was promptly taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities identified and apprehended the vehicle and driver later that morning. The suspect, 18-year-old Jakob D. Krise from Brasher Falls, New York, was taken into custody without incident on U.S. Route 11. Krise faces charges that include leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in death, driving while intoxicated under zero tolerance laws, and driving across hazard markings. He was released under probation supervision after being arraigned in Town of Pierrepont Court. Krise is scheduled for an upcoming court appearance as investigations continue.
