Two police officers, who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and Officer Daniel Hodges of Washington’s Metropolitan Police aim to prevent the establishment of a nearly $1.8 billion fund. They assert this fund is intended to reward the rioters and right-wing groups involved in the violence on that day.
The lawsuit accuses President Trump, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent of creating what the officers call a “slush fund.” This fund is accused of financing insurrectionists and paramilitary groups that engage in violent acts supporting Trump. The lawsuit contends that the Trump administration has exceeded its legal authority by forming the fund without Congress’s approval.
According to the administration, the fund is intended to assist individuals who claim they were unfairly prosecuted by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats. However, the fund has sparked significant opposition and is perceived by critics as a means to distribute taxpayer money to Trump’s supporters. The lawsuit emphasizes investigative reports that suggest the fund will be used, among other purposes, to compensate nearly 1,600 individuals charged with attacking the Capitol.
The White House, when questioned about the lawsuit, directed inquiries to the Justice Department, which was not immediately available for comment.
