A woman linked to Minnesota’s large “Feeding Our Future” scandal now faces charges in a daycare fraud scheme. Authorities report Fahima Egeh Mahamud, featured in a viral video by influencer Nick Shirley, has been accused of misappropriating millions intended for children’s meals.
On Wednesday, Mahamud was charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Court documents detail these charges.
Earlier this year, she faced indictment for her alleged involvement in the $250 million “Feeding Our Future” plot. Prosecutors claim she enrolled Future Leaders Early Learning, a daycare where she was CEO, into a federal child nutrition program. She falsely claimed to provide thousands of meals to children.
Beyond the nutrition program fraud, Mahamud was also charged Wednesday with a separate scheme targeting the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). This program helps low-income families with daycare costs. Between October 2022 and December 2025, she allegedly filed over 13,000 fraudulent CCAP claims, totaling about $4.6 million. Prosecutors argue she falsely certified collecting mandatory co-payments from families, a critical federal reimbursement requirement.
The Future Leaders Early Learning center was spotlighted in Shirley’s viral video as reported by FOX 9 Minneapolis. The influencer showcased Somali-run childcare centers around Minneapolis he claimed were empty and fraudulent.
The video prompted a swift response from the Trump administration, leading to an immediate and forceful multiagency crackdown.
Following the video’s release, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) froze about $185 million in federal childcare funding allocated to Minnesota.
Moreover, over 2,000 federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were dispatched to the Twin Cities to intensify investigations and enforcement efforts.
