In New Delhi, amidst the hustle of the city’s traffic, auto-rickshaws often feature an array of advertisements. Recently, an unexpected face has joined the mix: former U.S. President Donald Trump. Decorating these vehicles is a slogan that reads, “Happy Birthday America!”
Around 100 auto-rickshaws are now displaying images of Trump and the Statue of Liberty, creating a striking contrast against typical ads for local businesses such as fertility clinics and language courses.
This distinctive campaign, introduced by Sergio Gor, the U.S. ambassador to India, marks a larger celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. Celebrations include various cultural events and public engagements globally.
The U.S. Embassy announced this initiative on social media with the message: “Freedom is on the move … literally!” New Delhi residents are encouraged to spot these auto-rickshaws: “Catch them if you can — they’ll be popping up all over Delhi soon.”
Washington is working to mend its relationship with India. Tensions had grown due to Trump’s tariff policies impacting Indian exports. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit New Delhi to further these efforts.
Despite the campaign’s intentions, it holds little significance for some auto-rickshaw drivers. Ganesh Kumar, one such driver, initially refused the offer to brand his vehicle with Trump’s image.

“I told them I didn’t want it,” Kumar stated. He eventually agreed when offered a packet of tea as compensation.
Another driver, Pradeep Kumar, consented primarily because his auto-rickshaw’s canopy was torn and the poster served as a patch. On being asked about the advertisement’s message, he admitted, “I know he is Trump. Don’t know much other than that.”
