Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, announced a significant reorganization, laying off about 10% of its workforce. This move is part of an effort to shift focus towards artificial intelligence. The layoffs, affecting approximately 8,000 employees, are set to occur in May.
A spokesperson for Meta, Erica Sackin, confirmed that affected employees have been notified. Additionally, about 7,000 employees will have their roles changed to support AI-driven initiatives. These changes are part of Meta’s broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the AI sector.
According to a source with knowledge of the reorganization, these employees will join new teams focusing on AI projects. Though the specific teams growing at Meta were not disclosed, it is understood that four new AI teams will work on developing tools and applications.
This development reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence. Meta aims to catch up with competitors like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, which currently lead the AI race. The company plans to double its capital expenditures on AI infrastructure compared to last year.
Meta’s shift towards AI comes during challenging times. The company is retreating from its earlier focus on the virtual reality “Metaverse,” which CEO Mark Zuckerberg once envisioned as Meta’s future. Additionally, the company faces legal challenges related to its platforms’ impact on youth mental health. In June, Meta and other tech firms will address lawsuits from school districts accusing them of contributing to mental health issues and social media addiction among students.
