Train service between New York and Philadelphia resumed on Wednesday afternoon. Two fires near the tracks in North Philadelphia caused a temporary halt. Amtrak Northeast confirmed the update on X. They stated, “Trains will still experience delays due to single tracking near Philadelphia. We sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience this may have caused.”
A “Temporary Hold” was enforced earlier for firefighting activities close to the tracks. The interruptions occurred as a severe heat wave affected Pennsylvania. High temperatures and humidity have strained infrastructure, spurred brush fires, and led to widespread heat advisories across the state.
Rachel Cunningham, Philadelphia Fire Communications Director, informed Newsweek that sparks from the same train likely led to both fires. Around 300 firefighters responded as both fires reached two-alarm status. No injuries were reported.
Rachel Cunningham told Newsweek, “Crews responded to the first fire at North 2nd Street and West Erie Avenue around 1 p.m. Just 15 minutes later, firefighters attended a second blaze along the tracks at West Glenwood Avenue.”
Firefighters controlled the first fire by 2 p.m., and the second shortly after 4 p.m. Cunningham added, “Wind contributed to the fire spread as well.” To address the heat, R&R companies relieved crews on the scene. She stated that, while fires along tracks aren’t common, their occurrence during hot, dry conditions is not unusual.
Amtrak’s spokesperson informed Newsweek that emergency teams worked on a brush fire approximately five miles east of Gray 30th Street Station, also affecting a nearby scrapyard. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives task force, alongside the Philadelphia fire marshal, investigated the scene.
Service delays led to cancellations of at least two routes: the 654 from Harrisburg to Philadelphia and the 609 from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. Amtrak announced this on X. The New York-Philadelphia route is among the busiest in the Northeast Corridor, carrying tens of thousands daily. Any full-service suspension impacts the entire East Coast rail network, delaying trains from Washington to Boston.
What Happens Next
Amtrak has noted continued delays post-suspension. The railroad will deliver updates throughout the afternoon as conditions change. Travelers should monitor the Amtrak app or website for real-time status before traveling to stations.
