Mendoza Balances Rookie Responsibilities with Las Vegas Raiders Commitment

2 weeks ago 0

Fernando Mendoza, a rookie quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, is focused on his preparation for the upcoming NFL training camp. Mendoza declined an opportunity to visit the White House with his Indiana teammates, who won the national championship. He prioritized staying with the Raiders for practice instead.

Mendoza was required to attend the NFL Players Association Rookie Premier event, which conflicted with his desire to practice. He expressed his displeasure about this. “I’d rather be practicing right now,” Mendoza shared with SI.com, revealing his upset over missing practice for the event.

Despite his frustration, Mendoza acknowledged the benefits of the Rookie Premier. “I’m going to have a smile on my face and make the most of that present moment,” he said. He found value in learning about the NFLPA benefits and networking with mentors, which he believes will help him make a positive impact.

Mendoza was the top pick in the 2026 draft and is expected to start the season on the bench behind Kirk Cousins. However, if Cousins falters or the team struggles, Mendoza may see playing time. Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon believes Mendoza might start by mid-season. “I think it’s good for him right off the bat to be behind somebody,” Moon commented, emphasizing that Mendoza can learn without immediate pressure.
