President Donald Trump recently returned from Beijing after discussing trade with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, their summit left unresolved the important issue of Taiwan, a key factor in U.S.-China relations.
Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, highlighted Taiwan’s significance in technology and national security. In an interview with Fox News Digital, he emphasized Taiwan’s central role in the global tech race, stating, “If you want to understand the future of AI, economic power, and national security, you must understand Taiwan.” Freedom, known for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party, expressed concerns about the lack of progress made during the meeting. He stated, “Trump understands that communist China is America’s biggest long-term geopolitical challenge.” Freedom believes that strong U.S. leadership is essential in maintaining stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Trump’s potential arms sales to Taiwan are crucial. While Trump has not publicly decided on a new arms package, he approved $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan in December 2025. A senior White House official mentioned that Trump will soon decide on another Taiwan arms package.
During the summit, top American tech CEOs joined Trump in China, highlighting the U.S.-China rivalry over artificial intelligence. Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te recently stated in a Facebook post that U.S. arms purchases are vital for regional conflict deterrence. He emphasized that the Taiwan Relations Act underlines the U.S.’s security commitment to Taiwan and serves as a critical deterrent against actions that threaten regional peace.
Freedom reiterated Taiwan’s importance, explaining how deeply connected it is to America’s economy, military readiness, and AI futures. He noted the pivotal role of Taiwan-made chips used in various technologies and defense applications. Major companies like Apple, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm depend heavily on Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturing. The U.S. International Trade Administration considers Taiwan central to global semiconductor production, mainly due to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
China has increased military activity around Taiwan, which includes air and naval exercises. A Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson highlighted the contrast between cross-Strait peace and Taiwan independence. Maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait is a shared interest for both China and the U.S.
Freedom plans to visit Taiwan to organize basketball camps. He expressed his intent to document his trip and showcase Taiwan’s vibrant, democratic society. Freedom also aims to raise awareness of China’s treatment of Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, Tibetans, and others. Ashley J. DiMella reports on politics for Fox News Digital.
