Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Senate in Maine, has sparked controversy with past comments about the U.S. Army. Posted on his now-deleted Reddit account, Platner described the Army as “absolute trash” and criticized its personnel.
Platner, a former Marine Corps member and Maryland Army National Guard veteran, shared strong opinions online. In April 2019, he mentioned serving in competent units but called the organization “absolute trash.” He criticized the Army for its lack of leadership and warrior ethos, contrasting it with the Marine Corps.
His criticism extended to individuals. In 2019, Platner commented on wounded Army veteran Teddy Daniels, who received the Purple Heart, saying Daniels “didn’t deserve to live.” Such comments have become a focal point in the Maine Senate race, where he challenges GOP incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.
Platner’s harsh remarks about Daniels and other Reddit posts, which include slurs and criticisms of rural Americans, have generated significant attention. He identifies as a Marxist and his language has become a topic of debate on his campaign trail.
During a town hall on October 15, 2025, Platner addressed these issues. Despite negative remarks, he acknowledged the Army’s strengths in light infantry and special operations units. He emphasized the need for internal criticism within the military, stating, “we have a duty to be brutally honest.”
Earlier, Platner apologized for his Reddit posts, describing them as not reflective of who he is today. He urged people to judge him by his current actions, not past online statements.
Platner’s remarks have faced criticism from fellow veterans. Adam Schwarze, a veteran running for Senate in Minnesota, condemned Platner’s comments on service members dying.
Platner has attributed his outspoken behavior to trauma from Middle East deployments and the humor used in the Marines. His controversial comments have not been limited to Reddit. In a 2024 podcast, he criticized deceased Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, suggesting civilian casualties inflated Kyle’s numbers. Platner also questioned the competence of Navy SEALs but praised Army Rangers.
National Republican Senatorial Committee press secretary Bernadette Breslin criticized Platner’s comments, highlighting the negative impact on his campaign. As the Senate race continues, these past remarks remain a significant issue for Platner and his campaign.
