Marta Kostyuk’s Emotional Victory at the French Open

Marta Kostyuk faced an emotional challenge during her first-round match at the French Open. Prior to the match, a missile nearly struck her parents’ home in Ukraine, creating a difficult and emotional start to her day.

Challenging Match

Despite the emotional distress, Kostyuk emerged victorious against Oksana Selekhmeteva, winning 6-2, 6-3 on Court Simonne-Mathieu. The 15th seed described it as one of the most challenging matches of her career.

“This morning, 100 meters away from my parents’ house, the missile destroyed the building and it was a very difficult morning for me,” Kostyuk said. “I didn’t know how I would handle it, I’ve been crying part of the morning.”

Kostyuk received the alarming message at 8 a.m. and was overwhelmed by thoughts of what could have been. Her relief was palpable knowing her family, comprised of 17 people, avoided injury.

Finding Strength

The experience didn’t deter Kostyuk. She expressed that everyone being alive encouraged her to play. After the match, Kostyuk received applause from the fans and shared how the resilience of Ukrainian people motivated her. She saw attendees with Ukrainian flags, providing her with further encouragement.

“I think it’s important to keep going. My biggest example is Ukrainian people,” Kostyuk stated.

Soon, Kostyuk will face American Katie Volynets, while her fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina competes against Anna Bondar.

High Temperatures Affect Play

The opening day of the tournament was marked by high temperatures, with players and spectators coping with the heat. At 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit), the heat posed a challenge to Frenchman Arthur Gea, who had to take an emergency break during his match against Karen Khachanov.

Players worked to stay hydrated while spectators used newspapers to fan themselves. On Court Philippe-Chatrier, Belinda Bencic secured a win over Sinja Kraus with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

In the night match on Chatrier, Novak Djokovic prepared to face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Two days after his 39th birthday, Djokovic marked a milestone, playing in his 82nd Grand Slam tournament, surpassing the previous record held by Roger Federer and Feliciano Lopez.
