The bystander injured during an exchange of gunfire between Secret Service agents and a gunman near the White House is reported to be in stable condition. This incident took place on Saturday evening, with the police in Washington continuing their investigation into the attack.
The shooter, identified as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old from Dundalk, Maryland, approached the northwestern corner of the White House complex at around 6 p.m. He retrieved a gun from his bag and began firing at a Secret Service checkpoint, prompting the agents to return fire, resulting in his death.
An unidentified male bystander was caught in the crossfire and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery. He remains in stable condition as confirmed by the Secret Service and Metropolitan Police.
Investigations are ongoing to ascertain who shot the bystander. Authorities are also piecing together comprehensive details of the incident, including the number of shots fired and the justification for the Secret Service’s use of force. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will independently review the findings once the investigation concludes.
No Secret Service agents were injured during the gunfire exchange. Audio recordings from television reporters on the White House’s north lawn captured numerous gunshots exchanged between Mr. Best and the Secret Service.
Mr. Best had been monitored by law enforcement for nearly a year. He was flagged by the Secret Service for suspicious behavior around the White House area. Earlier in June, he was arrested for unlawfully entering a restricted area after blocking a vehicle from entering the east side of the White House. Upon arrest, he claimed to be Jesus Christ and expressed a desire to be arrested.
In July, he ignored warnings and entered a restricted area of the White House grounds. After his arrest, a judge issued a stay-away order. However, he missed the subsequent hearing, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest, limited to the District of Columbia.
Mr. Best resided near Baltimore, Maryland. It remains unclear if he entered the district prior to the incident on Saturday.
