The Lost Continent, one of Universal Orlando’s iconic themed lands, is starting a phased closure at Islands of Adventure. Demolition work has commenced in the area, marking the beginning of substantial changes. According to reports, footage from a local news helicopter revealed an excavator next to a pile of rubble.
A spokesperson from Universal Orlando shared with Fox News Digital that venues and experiences within Lost Continent will permanently close in phases to make way for a new themed area. This includes the closure of Mythos Restaurant, slated for 2027.
Debuting with Islands of Adventure in 1999, the Lost Continent played a key role in shaping the park’s identity. Its mythology-inspired architecture, towering stone facades, and storytelling based on ancient legends created a distinctive atmosphere. It merged fantasy adventure with live entertainment and cutting-edge effects, captivating guests through its unique charm.
The Lost Continent housed famous attractions, including the Dueling Dragons roller coasters. These coasters, later rethemed as Dragon Challenge following The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’s arrival, were celebrated for their intertwined designs and synchronized dispatches. Poseidon’s Fury was another standout, featuring dramatic elements like water tunnel effects, fire bursts, and live actors.
Over the years, Universal gradually transformed the area. In 2010, the Dueling Dragons coasters were rethemed as Dragon Challenge as part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion. This attraction closed in 2017, paving the way for Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, now popular among visitors.
The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad show, known for its stunts, ended in 2018. Poseidon’s Fury concluded in 2023. As per Universal’s update, Mythos Restaurant will operate until 2027 amidst the phased closure.
Universal’s plans further include a dynamic range of new guest offerings. The resort announced its Horror Make-Up Show at Universal Studios Florida is temporarily closed to prepare for a reimagined experience, blending classic and modern horror elements.
Hogwarts Castle at Islands of Adventure undergoes regular maintenance and refurbishment, ensuring its continued appeal. Universal Orlando will introduce Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift in 2027, a high-speed roller coaster inspired by the blockbuster movies.
The demolition brings mixed reactions among Universal visitors. Some express relief over the changes, noting long-closed attractions. Others mourn the loss, sharing memories and sentiments about the land’s impact. The departure of Lost Continent marks the end of an era for many.
