Trump Calls for Expansion of Abraham Accords

2 weeks ago 0

President Trump has urged additional Middle Eastern countries to join the Abraham Accords. These U.S.-brokered agreements have normalized relations between Israel and several states. Trump emphasized that further cooperation could strengthen the region if more nations participate.

On social media, Trump highlighted the potential benefits of wider participation and even suggested Iran might consider joining. In a separate message, he encouraged Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Pakistan to be ready to sign the agreements.

Since his re-election in 2024, Trump has aimed to expand the accords, but progress has been limited. Kazakhstan joined in November, despite already having full diplomatic ties with Israel.

Expanding the accords could address concerns from Iran critics who oppose peace talks with Iran. Senator Lindsey Graham has expressed apprehensions about a peace deal with Iran. Nonetheless, he sees potential normalization with Saudi Arabia and others as a significant development. Graham noted, “It will be historic and one of the most consequential agreements in history.” He added, “The main goal has always been to isolate Iran.”

Experts suggest that a swift resolution is improbable. They believe that the ongoing conflict, initiated by the U.S. and Israel against Iran, may not motivate countries like Saudi Arabia to join the accords promptly.
