Evacuation orders continue for over 40,000 residents near Garden Grove, California, due to an unstable chemical tank at an industrial site. Despite eliminated threats of a major explosion, Orange County fire officials warn of a potential smaller scale explosion.
TJ McGovern, interim fire chief for the Orange County Fire Authority, emphasized the ongoing danger. “The crisis is not averted,” McGovern stated at a news conference. “Evacuation zones are still in place. The threat is not eliminated.” In an interview with KTLA, McGovern noted the possibility of the tank leaking or exploding, albeit less severely than initially feared. Local authorities are currently assessing safety for residents before lifting evacuation orders.
The situation evolved as a crack in the tank began relieving pressure, with temperatures inside dropping. On Sunday night, firefighters removed insulation from the tank to accelerate cooling efforts. Progress is reportedly positive for the first time since the tank was discovered overheating.
State Senator Thomas J. Umberg, representing the evacuated area, remarked on the progress and the public’s desire to return home once safety is assured. Initially, firefighters responded to the site on Thursday, where about 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a chemical known for causing eye, skin, and respiratory irritation, was at risk of explosion due to overheating.
Following rapid pressure increase and bulging signs, local authorities issued evacuation orders on Friday. By Sunday, the tank showed a crack, releasing some internal pressure and dropping temperatures from 100 to 93 degrees.
Craig Covey, incident commander with the fire authority, confirmed the crack and pressure release on Monday. Meanwhile, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office has launched an investigation into GKN Aerospace, a company manufacturing jet engine parts and aircraft components.
