Exploring American Polarization and the Role of Faith

4 months ago 0

A new voice in the Opinion section as of January 2023, I delve into a variety of topics, often focusing on uncovering the deeper narratives behind significant issues. Central questions I explore include the origins of American polarization and dysfunction, the widespread feelings of loneliness and anxiety among Americans, and the significant decline in religious affiliation.

My writings span diverse themes, such as faith, friendship, marriage, and parenting, alongside discussions on international conflicts like the war in Ukraine and developments in American constitutional law. I also frequently examine religion in America, with a particular focus on the evangelical church’s vitality.

My Background

My path to journalism has been winding. Raised in Alabama and a small Kentucky town, I completed my education at Lipscomb University and later Harvard Law School. Initially a commercial litigator and later a constitutional lawyer, I briefly taught at Cornell Law School in 1999.

In 2006, I joined the Army’s JAG Corps as a lawyer after obtaining an age waiver, serving in Iraq with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Surge in 2007, receiving a Bronze Star for my service. Throughout my legal career, I defended free speech, religious freedom, and due process, working with both commercial and public interest law firms.

After 21 years in law, I transitioned to journalism, joining National Review as a senior writer in 2015 before moving to The Dispatch in 2019 and contributing to The Atlantic. In 2023, I started writing for The Times.

As a passionate fan of sci-fi and fantasy, I enjoy discussing definitive rankings of popular series such as Star Wars. My book “Divided We Fall: America’s Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation” addresses the dangers of polarization, emphasizing the need for dialogue across different viewpoints. I advocate for a vision of American democracy where diverse communities coexist with equal rights and cultural tolerance, striving to live up to ideals like justice, kindness, and humility as stated in Micah 6:8.

I currently reside in Tennessee.

Journalistic Ethics

As an opinion writer, I strive to address opposing perspectives fairly, ensuring accuracy and soundness in my analysis. Personal and professional transparency, including admitting mistakes and explaining changes in opinion, is crucial. Guided by the Times’s Ethical Journalism Handbook, I disclose potential conflicts and seek editorial guidance for ethical concerns, akin to lawyers consulting a bar association.
