The Houston Astros clinched a decisive no-hit shutout against the Texas Rangers, achieving a 9-0 victory in Arlington on Monday. This marks the team’s fourth consecutive win and their 17th regular-season no-hitter.
Tatsuya Imai played a crucial role, starting the game and pitching six innings. He was instrumental in keeping the Rangers hitless before Steven Okert and Alimber Santa, both relievers, took over the mound. The trio succeeded in securing the first combined no-hitter since a similar performance by Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers in September 2024.
Imai, in his first Major League Baseball season, joined the Astros from Japan in January. His impressive track record includes being a three-time All-Star in Japan and maintaining a 1.92 ERA with the Seibu Lions last season. This game highlights his transition to American baseball with a significant contribution to the Astros.
With Imai walking three of the first four batters, a double play helped stabilize the defensive strategy early in the game. Okert took on the seventh inning, and Santa was flawless in the final two innings. Santa’s debut performance was notable as all six batters he faced were swiftly retired. His final pitch secured the no-hitter with a called strike confirmed by an ABS challenge.
This achievement adds to the Astros’ history, including their memorable no-hitter during the 2022 World Series against Philadelphia. The Texas Rangers experienced their sixth no-hit game in franchise history, last witnessed when Corey Kluber completed a no-hitter for the New York Yankees against them in May 2021.
Imai’s big-league debut underscores his promising career ahead in MLB, supported by the Astros with a substantial $54 million contract over three years.
