Democrats must confront a significant issue. Although Republicans have not succeeded in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Democrats have also fallen short. The party has consistently supported Israeli governments, even as their actions conflict with American interests and values.
For decades, the call for a two-state solution has not been backed by effective use of leverage. It is crucial to utilize this leverage to end the occupation and establish two states with full political and legal rights for everyone involved. This involves reconsidering taxpayer support for Israel and conditioning arms sales.
A growing number of Democrats see the current situation as unacceptable. Recently, 40 Democrats voted to block the transfer of certain military equipment to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. This is an increase from only 15 in April of the previous year.
While the necessity of Israel’s security is understood, there has been a tendency to accept uncritically Israel’s claim that American weapons are used solely for defense. It is important to recognize that these weapons have also been used to prevent a two-state solution and promote a vision of a ‘Greater Israel.’
The situation on the ground provides clear evidence. Violent settlers in the West Bank have acted with impunity, often with the complicity of Israeli security forces. The de facto annexation of the West Bank has confined Palestinians to shrinking enclaves. Mr. Netanyahu’s government has undermined the Palestinian Authority, which unlike Hamas, recognizes Israel’s right to exist. Observers in the occupied West Bank can witness an apartheid system in place. Meanwhile, Gaza remains devastated, with a severe humanitarian crisis and an armed Hamas.
Personal observations further highlight these issues. Visits to Israel and the West Bank have revealed the rapid growth of illegal settlements on land designated for a Palestinian state. Conversations with Palestinian families highlight their displacement and loss. Both Israelis and Palestinians have lost loved ones to violence. Ramallah hosts Palestinian American parents unable to obtain justice for their children killed by settlers or security forces. Aid trucks are stopped at checkpoints while Gazan children face starvation. The formerly vibrant city of Rafah lies in ruins, destroyed by American-supplied bombs and bulldozers.
