The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions and vacated his life sentences. The court found that Clerk Becky Hill influenced the jury to secure a guilty verdict, aiming to boost her book sales. Despite the reversal, Murdaugh remains incarcerated due to a 40-year federal sentence for financial crimes.
Exclusive photos captured Hill appearing calm on a swinging bench outside her home. Hill, facing a civil lawsuit from Murdaugh, resigned in 2024 following jury tampering allegations. Charges of obstruction and misconduct against her led to a guilty plea in December 2025, resulting in a sentence of three years on probation.
The state’s highest court accused Hill of influencing the jury, calling it a “breathtaking and disgraceful effort.” This led to the reversal of Murdaugh’s convictions in May. The court highlighted that Hill’s actions deprived Murdaugh of a fair trial.
Murdaugh remains imprisoned and will receive a new trial. Paul and Maggie, his son, and wife, were killed on their family property on June 7, 2021. A recorded 911 call from Alex indicated the severity, “My wife and child were shot badly,” he said. Initially found guilty in March 2023, his convictions were overturned this year.
Separately, Murdaugh was convicted in both state and federal courts for stealing millions from clients. His surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, expressed doubt about his father’s involvement in the murders.
