At a Texas amusement park, eight riders found themselves stuck near the top of a towering roller coaster for over three hours before being rescued by firefighters. The incident occurred at Pleasure Pier in Galveston, when the Iron Shark roller coaster stopped unexpectedly during its ascent. Responding to the situation around 5:35 p.m. on Thursday, the Galveston Police Department coordinated with the Galveston Fire Department to free the stranded passengers.
The rescue operation involved using a ladder truck and safety harnesses to safely lower the passengers one by one, which took approximately three and a half hours. The malfunction, captured live by local TV stations, showed the riders stranded near the top of the coaster’s 100-foot vertical lift hill. Notably, some riders were identified as students from Energized for STEM Academy Middle and High Schools, who were on a field trip.
The Houston Independent School District (HISD) expressed gratitude for the safety of all students and staff involved. In a statement, they acknowledged the rescue efforts ensured everyone’s safety, and they maintained communication with the families of the students.

Officials did not disclose the specific cause of the ride’s malfunction, though Terry Turney, COO of Pleasure Pier, explained that the ride stopped as designed to ensure safety once the malfunction occurred. Turney reassured that a full inspection would take place before the ride resumes operation.
