Dr. Kristin Struble, a functional medicine pediatrician in Arizona, offers insight into these options. She points out that calling fast-food meals ‘nutritious’ might be overstated.

To illustrate, Taco Bell’s Veggie Mexican Pizza topped the list. Yet, Struble cautions that processed flour tortillas in fast-food might cause gut inflammation due to preservatives.

Struble also notes that the vegetarian choice lacks protein, leaving you hungry shortly after. Instead, she recommends alternatives such as Chick-fil-A’s Grilled Nuggets paired with the Kale Crunch Salad and a Fruit Cup.

Optimal Fast-Food Selections

Dr. Lauren Powell, practicing in Georgia, agrees with Struble. The grilled nuggets stand out as a better option. However, Powell warns about the kale salad’s dressing due to ingredients like soybean oil and preservatives.

Many might not tolerate kale well, according to health professionals. Instead, they suggest consuming burgers without buns and avoiding highly processed carbs such as French fries.

Burgers and Additional Alternatives

Three popular burgers made the list: McDonald’s, Five Guys, and In-N-Out. Choosing them without buns and ensuring the meat isn’t overly processed makes them sensible choices, experts advise.

Instead of processed carbs, opt for sides like Wendy’s baked potato. It’s a transparent choice, Powell mentions.

Seek salads for dining out, and pay attention to salad dressings. Powell suggests olive oil with sea salt and black pepper for a healthier alternative. Chipotle’s protein-focused menu items, including black beans, provide fiber and healthy fats. However, avoid their tortillas, chips, and white rice.

Traveling and On-the-Go Meals

For summer travelers, Powell recommends visiting grocery stores instead of fast-food restaurants. It not only promotes healthier eating but also gives some exercise.

Instead of reaching for fast-food, pack meals ahead to avoid chemically laden options, Struble advises.

Nuts make for a quick, healthy food source accessible at convenience stores. However, be cautious with protein shakes, which often contain sugar and processed ingredients.

When fast food is a necessity, Powell suggests treating it as a rare choice rather than a habit.
