In her upcoming book View From the East Wing, Jill Biden shares her experience during her time in the White House, focusing on personal and political challenges faced by her and her husband, President Joe Biden. She offers a glimpse into their daily lives and significant events, like the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6 insurrection.
Health Concerns During the Presidency
Jill Biden candidly discusses her husband Joe Biden’s health issues while serving as president. On February 28, 2024, during his annual exam at Walter Reed Medical Center, Joe Biden was reported as a robust and healthy 81-year-old, capable of fulfilling presidential duties. The White House provided top-notch medical care, with a fully staffed doctor’s office available at all times.
Despite having excellent medical support, Joe began experiencing frequent nighttime awakenings. Initially, Jill was not overly concerned, attributing this to common age-related issues. Yet, she was vigilant and informed Joe’s doctors about the situation, recognizing the importance of addressing health concerns promptly.
The Unexpected Diagnosis
Joe Biden’s symptoms worsened, leading to an appointment with a urologist at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. The examination revealed the need for further investigation. A biopsy on May 15 confirmed he had cancer, and additional tests were ordered to determine if it had spread.
The situation was shocking, as routine screenings like prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests are not typically recommended for men over 70 due to prostate cancer’s slow progression in older individuals. However, Joe’s high PSA levels indicated advanced cancer.
Coping with Advanced Prostate Cancer
A PET scan on May 16 revealed the cancer had reached stage IV, spreading to his bones. While prostate cancer is quite treatable when caught early, the challenge lies in its advancement. Jill Biden highlights the surprise of such a diagnosis given the constant medical oversight available to the president of the United States.
Efforts to manage the condition quickly commenced as Joe began hormone therapy on May 22. The treatment, although taxing, promised more years of life, with doctors convinced the cancer might not be lethal.
Handling Public Perception and Treatment
Amidst managing Joe’s health, the Bidens faced scrutiny and defensive stances regarding how the illness progressed so far undetected. Despite criticism, their focus remained on immediate treatment and adapting to life while dealing with cancer, a familiar battle for Jill who had supported family through serious illnesses previously.
Jill’s narrative is not only a personal account but also sheds light on the pressures and expectations faced by the presidential family during unexpected hardships.
