The United States reported on Sunday that it launched a series of “self-defense strikes” targeting military sites in southern Iran. These occurred over the weekend and are part of ongoing hostilities that have escalated over the past week.
Shortly after the U.S. strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps claimed it targeted a military base. This base, according to Iranian forces, had facilitated an American strike on a communications facility in southern Iran.
Meanwhile, Kuwait’s military announced on social media early Monday that its air defenses were handling “hostile missile and drone attacks.” The source of these attacks was not specified. Kuwait, which hosts U.S. military bases, did not clarify if these incidents were linked to the U.S. or Iranian actions.
The recent military exchanges could create additional challenges in the ongoing U.S.-Iranian negotiations aimed at formulating a framework to cease hostilities.
The U.S. Central Command disclosed that the strikes on Iran’s Persian Gulf coast targeted radar, command, and control sites for drones in the city of Goruk and on the Island of Qeshm. This was detailed in a statement released late Sunday.
According to Central Command, the U.S. strikes on Saturday and Sunday were reactions to perceived “aggressive Iranian actions.” This includes the downing of an American military drone said to be operating over international waters.
The Revolutionary Guards issued a statement on Monday explaining that the Iranian military targeted a particular base in retaliation. The state news agency of Iran conveyed the statement, noting that it was a response to an American strike on a communications tower located on a southern island. They warned that Iran may adopt different strategies if such strikes reoccur.
This marks the third series of American strikes in southern Iran within a week.
