Arrests Made for Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The United States Park Police have detained several individuals in connection with damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This announcement follows President Trump’s statement attributing recent vandalism to causing fluorescent green algae and visible tears in the newly applied coating, termed ‘American Flag Blue.’ The president highlighted the gravity of these actions. He emphasized their impact on national monuments and called for significant legal repercussions for those involved. He assured the public that restoration efforts will start immediately.

David Hearn, a 67-year-old resident of Bethesda, Maryland, experienced this firsthand during his 64-mile cycle trip. After he briefly touched the pool out of scientific curiosity, authorities detained him for five hours. He explained his actions were driven by the need to examine the peeling coating, which President Trump had recently commissioned. Despite warnings from park staff, Hearn, an Olympic canoe racer and watercraft material supplier, found himself detained by National Guard troops and Park Police.

Hearn, in an interview, described the coating’s texture as ‘rubbery.’ He awaits a court appearance next month and is currently seeking legal representation. The Washington Post initially covered Hearn’s arrest.

President Trump on Truth Social alleged sabotage to the pool’s surroundings, including damage to newly installed surfaces. He reiterated these acts were deliberate attempts to harm the iconic structure.

The Reflecting Pool has a history of leaks, algae problems, and plumbing failures. As part of planned improvements before the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, refurbishments were undertaken, but new challenges emerged. Workers have been actively removing algae and applying hydrogen peroxide treatments. President Trump reassured improvement in algae conditions and promised early next-week repairs on the affected areas.

While peeling paint does not seem to account for the algae blooms, President Trump insists foul play—similar to damage on the National Mall—is involved. He referenced previous discolorations forming numbers interpreted as threats against his presidency. Authorities continue investigations.
