In Chicago, the Barack Obama Presidential Center opened with events that sparked conversations. The opening featured a “land acknowledgment,” a concept some see as acknowledging the United States’ past concerning Indigenous peoples. A Native American dance show by the Black Hawk Performance Company highlighted Saturday’s events, showcasing dancers from various Indigenous tribes in the Chicago area.
Saturday was the third day of the grand opening of the center, with performances from international and local artists, including John Legend and local drum lines. The Native American performance in John Lewis Plaza involved a drum circle and traditional dances, concluding with audience participation.
“We’d also like to take a moment to recognize the original inhabitants of the land upon which we are gathered today,” said Valerie Jarrett, the former senior advisor to Obama.
However, the opening ceremony faced criticism for its land acknowledgment. Critics, including users on the platform X, viewed it as insincere.
Some performers at the event were from the Ojibwe tribe. The acknowledgment touched on the Anishinaabe, the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi nations.
Conservative voices, like Glenn Beck, criticized the Obama Foundation’s use of the center’s platform to address the topic of “stolen land.” Beck questioned the foundation’s sincerity in retaining the property.
The center includes a sign that acknowledges “sovereign Indigenous peoples.” The sign explains the long-standing presence of Indigenous communities and their efforts against colonialism. It also features a 2009 quote from Obama about broken treaties and the historical plight of Native Americans.
Further comments about the ceremony included criticism and satirical remarks, such as those referencing Chief Keef, a known figure in Chicago. This controversy has placed the opening events in a broader discussion about Indigenous recognition in the U.S.
