A tragic incident occurred on a MARTA train in Atlanta when a 66-year-old woman was fatally stabbed. The incident happened as the train moved between Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations. The victim has been identified as Margaret Swan by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.
MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher described the attack as random and senseless. In a statement, MARTA expressed condolences to the victim’s family and those who witnessed the attack.
Authorities have charged 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews with murder. He allegedly attacked Swan by initially cutting her throat while she sat alone on the train.
According to a warrant obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, CCTV footage shows Matthews boarding the train at 11:21 and approaching Swan. Within minutes, he allegedly began the attack. Swan was stabbed 18 to 20 times, according to the report. She cried for help during the assault.
Surveillance cameras captured the attack as Matthews allegedly stabbed Swan multiple times before throwing her to the floor. When the train reached Oakland City Station, Matthews exited with the knife. Officers promptly arrested him on the platform.
Emergency responders attempted to save Swan’s life, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The stabbing was reported at 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station.
This event has heightened safety concerns among Atlanta train passengers. Just last week, another individual was stabbed at a separate MARTA station. Fox News Digital has contacted the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for more details.
